Passing Fancies ~ August 2024
Reading: Deerskin by Robin McKinley, recommended in an online course about dark fairy tales that I just took
Art: I’m deep in thoughts about Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare. Join my Morbid Anatomy session on this cult classic painting!
Audio: Spotify’s “day lists” are pretty funny. Mine are mostly reacting to the large amount of Beatles I played all summer while my workplace was hosting a show of Paul McCartney’s photos.
Video: The Terror on Netflix (originally on AMC). Nearly every one of its ten episodes gave me bad dreams. It was excellent…and very dark and often gory. Also, a screening of Downtown 81 at the Metrograph with friends.
(Tr)eats: Mexican food at a new local taqueria. Heirloom tomatoes. Donut peaches. Blackberries from our own bush.
Drink: I actually enjoy dry white wines when the weather gets as hot as it did this August.
Garb: I’m getting tired of my tight rotation of machine-washable cotton summer dresses. I did buy a new pair of Ecco black lace-up sandals that actually don’t look orthopedic, and somehow I found them for a very low price.
Beauty products: A set called “Flush and Glow” is deeply discounted on Revolve right now. I already love their Neutra pencil so this is a way to a few more things at once.
Pleasures: Two very inspiring online classes that I took. The cessation of the heat waves. The NYPL’s reinstated Sunday service. The slow waning of the tourist season in NYC.
Plans: Meet a few writing/presentation deadlines in September! Attend a couple of book signings. Take the cats to the vet for their annual check-ups (exciting, I know). Plot some long-weekend getaways.
